Rupert Thorne is a supporting character as well as an antagonist during the first season of Batman: Caped Crusader. He serves as the overarching primary antagonist of the season. Thorne is a crime lord in Gotham City and an enemy of Batman.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Rupert Thorne is the current head of the Thorne Crime Family, one of the oldest and most powerful organized crime syndicates in Gotham. He has many officers of the GCPD on his payroll including Arnold Flass and Harvey Bullock. He regularly bribes Mayor Jessup and approached Harvey Dent with financial aid to his mayoral campaign in exchange for favors from the DA's office.

Thorne sees himself as a consummate businessman. He has no qualms whatsoever with comitting violence in order to achieve his goals, reasoning that it isn't personal but simply business. He keeps a cool, calm demeanor but never forgets or forgives an insult. Despite his criminal dealings, he values spending time with his son Matthew, who greatly admires him. Thorne is a cunning thinker and manipulator, as seen when he was able to fool Penguin into killing the wrong one of her two sons for selling her out.

Rupert Thorne is an older-looking man with white hair as well as a black tuxedo and a golden ring on his right hand.

Powers and Abilities[]

Thorne is a normal human with no superhuman powers. He is, however, the head of one of the biggest crime families in Gotham, with dozens of police and city officials in his pocket. This gives him considerable power within the city.

  • Despite all his crimes and bad deeds, Thorne appears to be a caring father to his son, Matthew. When his home was under attack by Two-Face, his first thought was to get Matthew to safety.
