Joseph Rigger also known as Firebug was a character in Batman: Caped Crusader.[1]
Biography[]
Early life[]
The Night of the Hunters[]
During an unstated amount of time, Firebug had committed a great many fire related crimes and attacks, before apprehended by the Police. He was later sentenced to Blackgate Penitentiary.
Firebug was to be transferred from Blackgate Penitentiary to Arkham Asylum, but unfortunately for him, he was taken by Detectives Arnold Flass and Harvey Bullock. Who planned to use the mentally unstable Rigger as a way to get the attention of the Batman, for whom they were tasked with capturing by Mayor Jessop.
Once in the back seat of Flass and Bullock’s squad car, the two began to mock Firebug, saying his criminal alias wrong and stating if he were to survive in prison, he would need a much a bigger reputation.
After stopping to check on fake car failures, Rigger took the bait Flass and Bullock had set and escapes from the vehicle, stealing back both his fireproof costume and deadly equipment. He then snuck into one of the complexes in the neighborhood the car had stopped in and filled his tanks full of lighter fluid and gasoline.
Believing himself in his twisted mind to be doing good and with a crazed smile on his face; Firebug then started setting buildings on fire. Until Batman arrived and stopped Firebug, saving everyone inside along with the help of James Gordon and Reneé Montoya.
Firebug watched from one of the windows of the burning building as more cops arrived to capture him. At that moment Rigger realized he had run out of fuel.
Cornered by Flass and Bullock, and with no means of escape, Firebug gave himself up. However, Flass realized that Rigger could reveal to the other law enforcement how he and Bullock were responsible for his escape and order Bullock to shoot him.
Harvey complied with this order and shot Rigger out of the window, where he crashed onto a car below, killing him instantly.

Trivia[]
- Bullock and Flass refer to Joseph as "Firefly" to Rigger's dismay. This refers to the more popular Batman villain Garfield Lynns AKA Firefly, who is also a technologically advanced serial-arsonist. Firebug's costume in Batman: Caped Crusader resembles Firefly's original costume from the comics.
