Trivia[]
- While he has the shape shifting abilities of later comic incarnations of Clayface such as Matt Hagan, Basil’s look is an adaptation of his first appearance in Detective Comics #40 from 1940. Originally just a serial killer who murdered actors out of jealousy and hatred for remaking his movies, he would later be like his successors and become a superhuman villain.
- His name was an amalgamation of two popular actors of horror movies in the era he was created, Basil Rathbone and Boris Karloff. The Rebirth comics took this further by having his father be named Vincent, both resembling and sharing the first name of classic horror actor Vincent Price.
- Basil's face in Batman: Caped Crusader resembles that of Boris Karloff.
- Basil mentions that he could have played a thousand faces, referencing historic horror movie actor Lon Chaney who was known as "The Man of a Thousand Faces".
- The Clayface's un-transformed appearance brings to mind "The Shadow," the pulp-hero who was one of the subtle inspirations for Batman.
- While impersonating Darryl Manning, Basil might imply that he, or Manning, are not interesting in women. This could be an allusion to how in Batman: The Animated Series, which Bruce Timm worked on, Clayface was implied to be attracted to men.
- Clayface's manner of attempting to kill Yvonne Frances is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Pit & the Pendulum.
