- This episode adapts from Detective Comics, Vol. 1, Issue #40, with the same premise and tone.
- The only difference from the comic, though, is that it didn't feature Dick Grayson as Robin.
- The episode’s title is an overt nod to a line from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, where Prince Hamlet laments of the two-faced nature of his uncle King Claudius and how he can “smile and smile and be a villain”.
